The nearest reasoning-class alternative, o3, scores higher at 80 and 85 but costs $2/$8. You pay roughly ten times as much for incremental gains.
Here is the part that makes R1 the standout rather than just cheap: reasoning models spend tokens thinking before they answer, and that thinking is billed at output rates. On an expensive model, a single hard problem can quietly burn through a large reasoning trace at $8 per million tokens, and the bill balloons in ways that never show up in the headline price. R1's $0.42 output rate means those same thinking tokens cost almost nothing.
